When Save the World Went Free

Fortnite Save the World, the original cooperative PvE mode that launched before Battle Royale, is now completely free to play. Epic Games removed the paywall that previously required players to purchase a Founder's Pack or unlock access through early access spending. The change makes the zombie-defense mode accessible to every Fortnite account at no cost, marking a historic shift for the game's oldest game mode.

What Is Included for Free Players

Free players get access to the full Save the World campaign, including all missions, hero classes and the base crafting system. You can build defenses, recruit heroes, complete story missions and fight the Storm and its husk enemies without spending a single V-Buck. The mode supports up to four-player co-op, so you can team up with friends for the full PvE experience at zero cost.

Changes for Existing Founders

Existing Founders who originally paid for early access receive exclusive legacy cosmetics and a Founder's badge that free players cannot obtain. These include the special Founder homebase nameplate, exclusive hero variants and the seasonal llamas that were part of the original purchase tiers. Epic has confirmed that Founder-exclusive rewards remain locked to those accounts and will not be given to new free players.

How to Start Playing Save the World

To start playing Save the World, launch Fortnite and select the Save the World mode from the main menu. No purchase is required. New players begin with the starter hero lineup and can earn additional heroes through gameplay. The campaign is split into multiple story missions across several worlds, each with increasing difficulty and better loot rewards as you progress.

What This Means for Fortnite's Future

Making Save the World free signals Epic's commitment to keeping the original Fortnite vision alive alongside Battle Royale and the newer Creative and Zero Build modes. The mode has maintained a dedicated community since 2017, and removing the paywall could bring a wave of new players who never tried it because of the cost. It also aligns with Fortnite's broader strategy of offering more free content across all game modes.

Tips for New PvE Players

If you are new to Save the World, focus on completing the main campaign missions first to unlock hero classes and basic crafting recipes. Join the public matchmaking groups to learn team strategies from experienced players. Prioritize upgrading your homebase research tree early, as the research unlocks permanent perks that carry across all your heroes and make later missions significantly easier.
