How Sega Made Sonic Shoot in Fortnite
The Sonic Shooting Problem
Sega creative officer Takashi Iizuka has revealed that the company had to build a brand-new version of Sonic the Hedgehog specifically so the character could shoot enemies in Fortnite. The revelation comes as part of the Chapter 7 Season 4 Gaming Legends collaboration, which brings Sonic into Fortnite as a playable skin with full weapon capabilities, something that was technically impossible with the original character model.
Takashi Iizuka Explains the Workaround
In an interview, Iizuka explained that Sonic's classic design was built around speed and momentum, not combat with firearms. The character's proportions, animation rig and movement system were never designed to hold or fire weapons. To make Sonic work in Fortnite's combat system, Sega's internal team created an entirely new character model that maintains Sonic's iconic appearance while adding the necessary skeletal structure for weapon handling and shooting animations.
Why Sonic Could Not Use Weapons Before
Before this update, Sonic could appear in Fortnite only as a cosmetic skin without the ability to use weapons in promotional material or special modes. The original character model lacked the arm articulation and animation framework needed for Fortnite's third-person shooting mechanics. Rather than compromise the character's identity, Sega and Epic worked together to develop a custom variant that preserves the look fans expect while functioning within Fortnite's gameplay systems.
How the New Sonic Differs from Classic Sonic
The new Fortnite Sonic model features subtle differences from the classic design to accommodate weapon handling. The arm proportions are slightly adjusted, and the animation rig includes new blend shapes for aiming and firing. These changes are minimal enough that most players will not notice them during normal gameplay, but they were essential for making Sonic a fully functional combatant in Battle Royale and Zero Build modes.
What This Means for Future Crossovers
This technical workaround sets a precedent for how Epic handles collaborations with characters that were not originally designed for shooting mechanics. Future crossovers with characters from platforming or puzzle games may follow the same approach: create a custom variant that preserves the character's identity while adding the combat capabilities Fortnite requires. The Sonic solution shows that no character is too iconic to be adapted for Fortnite's gameplay.
Tips for Playing as Sonic in Fortnite
When playing as Sonic in Fortnite, take advantage of the character's streamlined hitbox and fast movement animations. The custom model is designed to feel responsive during gunfights, so aggressive playstyles work well. Pair Sonic with high-damage weapons to maximize the contrast between your small hitbox and your firepower. The skin is available in the Item Shop as part of the Gaming Legends collaboration, and it works across all game modes.
