Fortnite Subregion Preference: How to Get Lower Ping
What Is Subregion Preference?
Subregion Preference is a new feature added in Fortnite v42.20 (Update 5.21), released September 17, 2026. It allows players to manually select a server subregion that is closer to their physical location, overriding the game’s automatic server selection. Previously, Fortnite would route players to whichever region had the lowest ping or available capacity, which sometimes sent players to suboptimal servers. With Subregion Preference, players can force a preference for a specific subregion, potentially achieving more consistent and lower latency connections.
How to Enable It in Settings
To use Subregion Preference, navigate to the Fortnite settings menu and look for the network or connection options. The new subregion setting appears as a dropdown or list where you can select your preferred server subregion. The setting applies at the account level, meaning it persists across sessions and devices. Players should note that the available subregions may vary by country and platform. Once selected, the game will attempt to connect to your preferred subregion before falling back to auto-selection if the preferred region is unavailable.
Why Lower Ping Matters
Lower ping means less network delay between your actions and the game’s response. In Fortnite, even small differences in latency can affect building speed, shooting accuracy, and reaction time in competitive matches. Players who have experienced being routed to distant servers, such as being placed in a region due to capacity issues, can now force a preference for a closer one. This is particularly important for competitive players and those who play in modes where timing is critical, such as Battle Royale and Reload.
Finding Your Best Subregion
To find your optimal subregion, start by checking your current ping without any subregion preference set. Then try different subregions and note which one gives you the lowest and most consistent ping. Players near regional boundaries may find that a neighboring subregion performs better than their "home" region. The best approach is to test during your typical play times, as server load varies throughout the day. Many players have reported that manually selecting a closer subregion reduced their ping by 10-20 milliseconds compared to auto-selection.
When Auto-Selection Is Better
While Subregion Preference offers more control, there are cases where auto-selection may be better. During peak hours, popular subregions may be at full capacity, causing matchmaking delays if you insist on a specific region. Auto-selection can route you to a less crowded subregion with similar or better ping. Additionally, if your internet connection is unreliable or has high packet loss, auto-selection may find a more stable connection. Players should experiment with both modes to determine what works best for their specific situation and location.
